Meet members of our community + why they move with us!
Meet Sonia
SCS Personal Training Member
I have been practising yoga on-and-off for over 25 years and it is such an important part of managing both my physical and mental health. I love the focus on the breath and using it to connect with mind and body in a very personal way. It does not matter how tired, stressed or reluctant I am at the start of a yoga class, I always get off the mat feeling refreshed, relaxed and re-energised.
What's something you have learnt about yourself and/or your body since joining The SCS?
Having lived with chronic pain syndrome for most of my adult life, I used to carry a lot of fear about moving beyond my comfort zone. With Toni and Chloe's support I now know I can move safely within my limits and can gradually increase both the range of movement and the weights I am lifting safely. My body is getting stronger and I don't need to be afraid of trying new things anymore.
What made you decide to join and/continue moving at SCS?
I wasn't looking for a gym per se but knew I needed to find somewhere to participate in movement activities both in a group setting and with the option of one-to-one support. I could not believe my luck when I discovered SCS and that it had a major focus on mental health. After stalking them online for about six months, I finally found the space and time to make contact, which happened to coincide with the move to New Lambton - a two minute walk from my workplace. From my first PT session with Toni, I have not looked back!
What is one thing you are proud of achieving since you joined SCS?
Apparently, I'm awesome at doing Bulgarian squats. A year ago, I didn't even know what they were!
What would someone who is nervous to join need to know about our community?
It's a safe space, not just because it's a community of women, but because it's a mentally safe space without judgement, ego or pressure. Come as you are and you will feel welcome.
